There are three dominant types of Feng Shui. Each school of Feng Shui is vastly different from one another. There is Form School, Compass School and Black Hat School along with many other types of Feng Shui that are not frequently used anymore. Classical Feng Shui is one of the more traditional Eastern practices. There are many differences between Classical Feng Shui and the other schools, but the biggest difference is that it is a macro, or “outward in”. This particular rule practices consideration in the environment, time, and direction of the property or space which you are applying Feng Shui to. Under the Classical branch of Feng Shui, the two most commonly used styles are Form School Feng Shui and Compass School Feng Shui.

Form School Feng Shui is typically only used outside. Form School Feng Shui is mostly about observing the direction of everything outside and the natural environment. You have to take into consideration the astrological energy and how it affects the environment. You also have to be able to access the qi of the environment so you can avoid the opposite types of energy in your surroundings. Form School Feng Shui is the oldest known form of Feng Shui. It was found in a document over 1,000 years ago, long before the magnetic compass was invented. They studied and learned the principles of qi, and then applied it to their environment in order to manifest healthy living situations, livestock, and crops. Today, Form School Feng Shui requires you to analyze natural features of the environment like trees, hills, mountains, and rivers. In the few cases that it's used inside, it's used for walls, buildings, and especially fences. Master Yang Yu Sung was the one who created the idea of Form Feng Shui in the early 19th century. Most of his documented teachings talk about Dragon’s Breath, which is within your chest and lungs and where most of your qi is located. He thought as if qi created a balance between Man, heaven, and earth.

Compass school Feng Shui is not as focused on the environment as it is focused on energies and things you can't directly see. There are two types of compass Feng Shuis: the Yang house, representing the emotion that comes from people, and the Yin house, representing where and how people get buried when they die. Beneath the umbrella of Compass Feng Shui, there is Flying Star, Eight Mansion, San He, and San Yuan Feng Shui. These types of Feng Shui have different quick and long-term effects that change as time passes. The Luo Pan is a certain type of compass that has been the tool that has been used in Compass Feng Shui for many years. Astrological charts help balance the compass and the energy in the room to make sure you know how you will react to the energy shifts in the room. Compass school Feng Shui is mostly based on the energies instead of the direction of things.

Black Hat Feng Shui, often known as BTB, is a shortened name for Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhism Feng Shui. This method was created in the mid-1970s by Lin Yun Rinpoche, who was the first person to introduce Feng Shui in the West. Black Hat Feng Shui is the most commonly used Branch in the United States. Black Hat Feng Shui utilizes a multitude of factors. This practice combines the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, holistic healing, transcendentalism, divination, and modern psychology. It focuses on meditation and quitting your center to feel the energies surrounding you. Many people who practice Black hat Feng Shui also practice chants and rituals. Black Hat doesn't use the compass of the direction of the environment and rather uses the Eight Aspirations otherwise known as the Bagua Map.
